SUSHI GO – GAME REVIEW AND HOW-TO-PLAY

Sushi Go is a fab game, and a real favourite in our house! It’s fun for small players, yet still interesting enough for adults. All three of our kids (13, 10, and 6) are hugely into anything Japanese and anything kawaii, so unsurprisingly, they all love it! The super-cute, kawaii food illustrations are adorable – but you don’t have to be into these things to enjoy the game!

HOW TO PLAY

The premise is simple – collect cards that will score you points. Everybody is dealt a hand, and after choosing a card to keep (and keeping it secret!), passes their hand on to the person to their left. You pick a card and pass, again and again, until there’s no cards left to pass! Different groupings of cards have different point values, so its always a gamble as to whether you’ll find the cards to complete your sets in other people’s hands! Getting 2 tempura prawns to score you 5 points is usually pretty easy – getting 3 sashimi to score 10 is much harder, as there’s less of them and EVERYBODY wants that 10 points! And uncomplete sets don’t score, so is it better to risk it, or play it safe with something that’ll definitely bring you points, albeit a lower number?!

Sushi Go is a brilliant game for kids to develop their own strategies, and work on their logical processing as to which cards will be the most advantageous for them. Plus there’s a bit of sneaky maths doing all that scoring!

The game is played over 3 rounds, with “pudding” cards only being counted up after all 3 – which can really affect the overall outcome. (Miss 10 is an absolute devil for pulling out a handful of puddings at the end and boosting her score!!!) It’s a quick play – 15 to 20 minutes for a complete game, and our kids always want to go again straight away! I can’t tell you how much we love this game!!!

The game has an 8+ age rating, but Mr6 plays just fine. (There’s just number recognition and a little bit of maths needed).
