3 QUICK AND EASY WAYS TO PROMOTE DIVERSITY WITH YOUR KIDS

As everyone watches events unfold in the United States, and combating racism is at the front of many people’s minds, I thought I’d share some of the easier things that we’re doing as a family, to try and raise the next generation better. Being worldschoolers, our aim is that our kids are exposed to a wide range of languages and nationalities – and with that of course, skin colours – as it is. But there’s always more that can be done.

Firstly, I feel I should point out that I’m in no way an expert – I’m just a mum with a few ideas that I’ve picked up along the way as I’ve listened to black parents. Nor am I doing this perfectly. But if you should need a starting point, for how to provide a bit more diversity for your kids, read on…………….

DIVERSIFY YOUR TOY BOX

Are there any people of colour represented in your kid’s toys? We’re huge fans of open-ended, wooden toys here, so its only natural that we should have some dark nins! But it doesn’t have to be wooden peg people – if your kids like superheroes get going with Black Panther, Miles Morales, and Falcon. Disney princesses? Grab yourself Tiana, Mulan, Elena and Pocahontas.

DIVERSIFY YOUR ART SUPPLIES

This is such a simple one – get yourself a box of people coloured crayons, colouring pencils or markers! There’s a few different brands out there that’ll provide you with an assortment of different skin tones in one handy box. There’s a whole world of people out there to draw!

DIVERSIFY YOUR BOOKSHELF

This one is literally a hashtag! Read some stories about people of different colours. We love biographies for kids, so Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks are no-brainers for us!!! And Miss10 loves the Zoey and Sassafrass series. Search the hashtag and see which books with POC protagonists your kids would like! We’re actively working on this at the moment.

Of course, this list shouldn’t be seen as a “do it and then you’re done” thing! They’re just small things, and its just the beginning! But hopefully, this will give you a good starting place, and might even give you an easy way into some of those hard conversations you don’t know how to have with your kids.
