(OR FOR GETTING BACK ON TRACK AFTER A BAD DAY!)

It’s that time of year again, where everyone is contemplating the upcoming new school year. And this year might look very different for a lot of kids, for obvious reasons. But if you’ve decided to worldschool (or homeschool), then you couldn’t have picked a better time! Autumn is great for home educators – the weather is still nice, but the world gets a little less busy as traditionally schooled kids head on back to their classrooms. The new “school” year can be overwhelming though, so here’s a few tips that work for our family, to get you off to a flying start – or to help you reset on a bad day!
- Get those kids outside!
There’s so much learning that can be done in the big wide world! You could head to your local nature reserve, farm park, forestry centre, lake, playground, skate park, beach, castle ruin, bike trail, state park…….. whatever you’ve got close by! Whether they’re learning about the flora and fauna or history of your area, or just burning off some energy, it’s all helping their learning. Just don’t forget drinks and snacks! (A must, if your kids are anything like mine!) And bonus points for taking binoculars or a field microscope!!!

2. Strew all the things!
OK, so this one involves having a bit of faith in your children! Seasoned home educators will have come across the term before, but for those that haven’t, strewing involves leaving things your kids might be interested in lying about and seeing what they gravitate to! It could be books, art and craft materials, a board game, some natural world bits like acorns or pinecones, Lego, playdoh, play scenes, a camera, microscope or anything else that might intrigue them. The idea isn’t that they will investigate all the things instantly – so don’t get offended when they completely ignore the lovely book you left on the sofa! – but more that they can pick the thing that interests them the most, and develop their curiosity. And you never know where it will lead them!

3. Read!
If all else fails, read!!! Have a family read aloud book. And a stack of picture books. And biographies for kids. And some cool looking non-fiction. Let your kiddo pick what looks good, and simply read it. They’re improving their literacy without you even trying!

Just remember, you don’t have to build Rome in a day! Happy home educating!!!
