I ATE SUNSHINE FOR BREAKFAST – BOOK REVIEW

By Michael Holland FLS and Philip Giordano

“Plants are essential to your world. Without them, no other living thing would be able to survive.”

The surprise hit book around here at the moment is I Ate Sunshine For Breakfast! I have to admit, I’d never heard of it when the lovely people at Flying Eye Books sent us a copy! But I’m so very glad they did!!! I was amazed when I opened it – it’s absolutely beautiful, and so full of knowledge that you’re bound to learn something alongside your kids, which I always think is the mark of a good kids non-fiction book! (Have you ever heard of a squirting cucumber?! Because I know I hadn’t!!!) The kids think it’s fantastic – particularly Miss11 – and keep going back to it over and over again!

The book is absolutely jam packed with plant info! There’s everything from the parts of a flower, to how leaves make food, the plant family tree to the historic uses for plants, to living fossils and much, much more! Despite the sheer amount of information in the book, it’s all split up neatly into small sections and paragraphs, making it super-kid-friendly, and very easy to digest. There’s even a helpful glossary at the back for all those botanical terms you’re not sure of! Plus, there are a number of fab suggestions for some simple plant-based science experiments – we’ve already tried one, and now the kids are begging to do the rest!!!

The illustrations are gorgeous – just the sort of colourful, slightly-retro graphics that we love! They add so much more information to the book, and complement the text beautifully. They’re just perfect for kids who are visual learners, or aren’t too confident in their reading yet. Plus, there are loads of cute bugs and animals sprinkled across the pages, which the kids loved hunting for!

I can see I Ate Sunshine For Breakfast being on our current book stack for a long time! It’s so educational, and very easy to dip in and out of, due to all the small sections – but you’ll want to keep reading, because it’s all so fascinating!!! It’s a perfect addition to your kid’s bookshelf. We love it!
