AMAZING EVOLUTION – BOOK REVIEW

By Anna Claybourne and illustrated by Wesley Robins

“We live in a world where everything changes.”

With a house full of mini scientists, we’re always on the lookout for fab science resources – and Amazing Evolution: The Journey of Life is just that! It’s absolutely packed full of information, broken down into easily understandable, bite-sized chunks, with brilliant explanations and helpful illustrations. (Plus, we just can’t get enough of gorgeous non-fiction picture books for kids! They’re the backbone of home education!!!)

With sections on understanding evolution, life through the ages, the family tree and evolution in action – plus a bonus “amazing adaptations” fact file – it covers everything you want to know and more, as it’s so jam packed with info, and is a great starting point for further discussion. There are even pages on dinosaurs and fossils, and the evolution of humans, so its brilliant for tiny palaeontologists and little historians too. The whole book is fantastic for inspiring curiosity in kids, and getting them to wonder about habitats and ecosystems – not to mention researching all the creatures more!

The illustrations are charming as well as helpful, and show all the plants and animals that are being discussed clearly – the kids loved pointing out the unusual animals they recognised, then finding out more about how they evolved. It’s fab for primary or elementary aged kids, though I wouldn’t be surprised if older ones learnt a thing or two as well!

Amazing Evolution is a brilliant and informative overview of the theory of evolution, and would be a fabulous and fun addition to any science curriculum or evolution unit study to further your child’s understanding. If you’ve got little scientists in your house, you’ll definitely want to get a copy! I’m sure we’re going to keep referring back to ours for years to come!
